Honorable Mention

WEN CM1452 15-Amp 14-Inch Premium

  • Carbon tipped blade: Yes
  • Motor: 15 Amp
  • Warranty: 2 years

This is another great option for user-friendly features and versatile cutting.

What I like

Of all the metal cutting saw blades out there, a carbide tipped blade offers the best performance when cutting metal. This model has a high quality carbon-tipped blade that is tough enough to cut through tough metals but gentle enough to cut plastic and wood cleanly. This provides great versatility to your workspace.

The adjustable angle fence on this model is another useful component. It pivots as much as 45 degrees to allow you to perform the functions of a miter saw in addition to all your other metal cutting needs.

The heavy aluminum base on this metal chop saw is one of the features geared towards the user experience. It limits vibration and helps support your workpiece to ensure accuracy in every cut. In combination with the steel cutting blades, you can cut through any material with ease.

What I don’t like

One feature that falls short of expectations is the blade guard. While it is great at performing its function, it has a tendency to break if you aren’t extremely careful during operation.

Overall, the WEN CM1452 15-Amp 14-Inch Premium metal chop saw is another one of the best metal saws currently available. It isn’t quite as durable as some of the higher end metal cutting chop saw models, but is offers some user friendly features and does a great job with various material types.

What Makes a Good Metal Chop Saw?

1. No Load Speed:

The no-load speed of a chop saw is the maximum speed it can reach without a load, meaning while it is not actively cutting through something. This value can vary quite significantly between different chop saw models.

A faster speed will get you through a cutting task more quickly, but it also increases the temperature at the cutting site and will cause more wear on the blades. A compromise between blade longevity and cutting performance is something that needs to be considered.

2. Blade Type (Abrasive Wheel Vs. Cold Saw Blade):

Chop saws can come with either an abrasive blade or a cold saw blade. An abrasive blade has a straight edge, whereas a cold saw blade will have teeth. Most chop saws will use cold saw blades, since it improves cutting performance.

A cold cut chop saw essentially eliminates heat production during cutting, so it will result in burr free cutting while working on wood, plastic, or composite materials, and it will remove the risk of sparks while cutting metals.

Not only is this safer, but it also results in a cleaner cut line. Both blade types can be carbide tipped, which will improve longevity and performance.

3. Power:

The amount of power provided by a chop saw motor is dependent on its amp value. A 15 amp motor will offer a substantial improvement in power over a 10 amp motor.

Most metal chop saws will have a 15 amp motor, and this is because the extra power allows you to cut more easily through stronger metals or thicker blocks of material.

Using a more powerful chop saw will improve its longevity since it won’t need to work as hard, and it will also require less manual effort to push the blade all the way down through the object you are cutting.

Both of these factors can improve productivity and efficiency, so unless you have very limited needs of your chop saws, a chop saw with a stronger motor is the way to go.

4. Safety Features:

There are a number of  features that can be found on chop saws that are designed for safety. Some things you’ll want to look for include a lock-off button, a blade guard, and a spark deflector. Spark deflectors are a great tool with abrasive blade chop saws, since these will produce sparks while cutting metal.

A spark deflector will limit the risk of sparks hitting you and it will also keep the work field clear while you cut.  A blade guard  reduces your access to the blade on the chop saw, preventing you from accidentally getting cut.

A lock off button is one of the most important safety features, since it prevents the tool from being turned on by accident. This is especially important for people working at home that may have children in and out of the shop.

5. Quick Release Vise/Quick Lock Vise:

A quick lock vise is a component that holds your material in place while you cut. The quick lock and release component allows you to switch out objects quickly and without hassle, so you can be more productive while working. Most metal chop saws will have a quick release system in place, but some more affordable models may not.

6. Blade Size:

Metal chop saws are characterized by larger blades than other saw types, so you can expect a blade between 14″ and 16″ in diameter. Larger blades will offer more cutting power, whether it is a cold-cut chop saw or an abrasive blade chop saw. A metal saw with a larger blade will have a deeper cutting depth, so it will get through thicker materials faster than a smaller blade.

Can Chop Saws Cut Metal?

Almost every chop saw out there can also be called a metal chop saw. Whether the power tool comes with abrasive blades or toothed blades, the chop saw will be able to cut through any metal type. As power tools go, metal chop saws are truly the powerhouse of the workshop.

Both straight edge blades and toothed blades (with each tooth carbide tipped or not) will be capable of cutting through metal quite easily. Non-coated toothed blades or abrasive blades will produce more sparks and heat than a carbide tipped blade, but whether you intend to invest in this special feature or not, there are many models out there that could claim the title of best metal chop saw.

If you are looking for a power tool capable of accomplishing any workshop task, a chop saw should be chosen above miter saws or stationary/portable band saws. A metal cutting chop saw can also be used to cut wood, plastic, lumbar, and any other composite materials you can think of, so versatility isn’t an issue with a chop saw.

Most models will have a cast iron base or steel base to offer stability while cutting through tough metals. PORTER-CABLE chop saws, DEWALT chop saws, and any chop saws by Evolution Power Tools will make a great metal saw for your workshop.

Are Chop Saws and Miter Saws the Same?

Chop saws and miter saws are in fact not the same. They look quite similar, as they are both a circular saw type, and they both attach to a tabletop. While they have some uses in common, they are designed for different purposes and therefore have quite a few features that differ.

Miter saws are designed for precision cuts at angles, so they are used primarily for detail work on various construction projects. While miter saws CAN be used to cut certain nonferrous metals with the right blade, they are most often used for carpentry purposes instead.

The arm that holds the blade can pivot quite freely, which is why they are the best choice for finesse work. Their range of motion makes them the most suitable choice for crown molding, picture frames and door frames, elegant baseboards, window casings, and much more.

Chop saws are the proper choice when you are looking to cut a steel pipe of nearly any size, sheet metal, or various other material types and object sizes. They aren’t quite as sophisticated as miter saws are when it comes to detail work, but they can often cut on an angle as well. Usually, you can achieve up to 45 degrees of tilt. Rather than an abrasive blade, these circular saws often use a carbide-tipped toothed blade in order to limit the sparks and heat produced.

Many models will use abrasive blades though, so you will need to take precautions against spark production. The carbide-tipped blade or abrasive blade on a chop saw will usually be at least 14″ in diameter, whereas miter saws will use smaller blades.

Both of these saw types will be superior to both standard and portable band saws for at-home use, especially when cutting metal. Both are great power tools for professional or casual use.
