How to Store Surfboards in Your Garage

Need to store your surfboard in your garage but don’t know how?

Storing your surfboard in the garage is a great idea but you need to do it the right way to ensure your surfboard has a long and healthy life.

Below you’ll find tips and tricks to store your surfboard safely in the garage all year round.

Let’s get started!

Should You Store Surfboards in the Garage?

Storing your surfboards in the garage is a great option as long as you follow the tips below to extend the life of your surfboard.

1. Clean your surfboard with fresh water

After you come back from the beach, it’s a good idea to wash your surfboard with freshwater. You want to prepare it for sitting in your garage for quite a while. You don’t want it to be caked in sand and saltwater when you take it out to be used again!

2. Avoid direct sunlight

Keep your surfboard out of direct sunlight otherwise, the UV rays will yellow out your board and its white finish may be tarnished. Your board can become weaker the more you leave it in sunlight as it’ll expand the foam and burn away the fiberglass and epoxy within.

If you don’t have anywhere to store your surfboard that isn’t in direct sunlight in your garage, you can remedy this by buying a cover for your surfboard that will protect it from any harmful UV rays.

3. Store the surfboard off the rails, nose and tail off hard ground

Finding space for your surfboard in a packed garage can be cumbersome but you should look to store your surfboard on a rack or on overhead storage. Never store your surfboard on hard ground as it may damage it after sitting for quite a while. If you can, prop the tail against something soft, like a towel or rag.

If you don’t have a way to store it propped up, then it’s recommended to store it on something soft. An extra blanket can make a big difference.

4. Remove the wax

Before you put your surfboard away for a rest, you can leave it out in the sun for a few minutes. The wax will harden up and you can remove it so you can have a clean surfboard.

5. Remove the fins

Removing the fins will give you a chance to clean the inside of the fin box. Once cleaned, your surfboard is ready to be put into storage in your garage.

3 Ways to Store Surfboards in your Garage

Below you’ll find three great ways to store your surfboard in the garage this winter!

1. StoreYourBoard Timber Surfboard Wall Rack

If you’re an avid surfer, then you likely have more than one surfboard. With this wall rack, you can hold four surfboards up to 20lbs each without any issue. The solid hardwood gives this rack a nice finish as well and will make for a great fit in your garage!

It fits all surfboards and gives you 9″ of space between each level so you can fit all kinds of boards on there with no problem. Installation is super easy and it comes with everything you need to install. It’s a great way to keep all of your surfboards off the ground during storage and you can grab a board and go with ease.

The only downside is that it doesn’t protect against sunlight but can be remedied by putting your surfboard in a bag before hanging it up.

2. StoreYourBoard SUP and Surfboard Ceiling Storage Rack

Low on space in your garage? Either invest in an overhead garage storage rack or go with a surfboard rack like this one. It holds up to 50lbs which is plenty for most modern surfboards It fits ceilings with a 12″ clearance and has 27″ wide arms so it’ll even fit most paddleboards as well.

The rails are padded to protect your surfboard from long periods of storage. The great part about this rack is that it’ll keep your board out of the sunlight which will protect it in the long run.

This is one of my favorite ways to store a surfboard in your garage as it’ll keep your surfboard out of the way and let you enjoy your garage that much more.

3. StoreYourBoard SUP and Surfboard Ceiling Storage Hoist

With an overhead surfboard rack, you’ll have to get the ladder out once you want to take it down for the beach. But with this hoist, you won’t ever have that problem again. It’ll hold your canoe, surfboard, or paddleboard up to 60lbs without any problem.

The adjustable straps will form to the shape of your board so it will stay controlled and leveled all year round. The lift also has a locking mechanism to hold your surfboard or paddleboard tightly in place so it won’t be rocking back and forth.

This super space-efficient option is another great way to put your surfboard to rest for the winter. Buckle up your surfboard and it’ll be tucked away until it’s ready to play again.

What to Avoid When Storing Surfboards in Your Garage

  • Avoid leaving your surfboard in direct sunlight
  • Don’t leave your surfboard in the car
  • Don’t store your surfboard on hard ground
  • Don’t store a dirty surfboard
  • Don’t leave your fins on when storing
  • Don’t stack your surfboards

Final Thoughts

As long as you wash your surfboard, get the wax off and protect it from sunlight, you should have no problem storing your surfboard in the garage. Find the right storage option for you and you’ll have a secured surfboard this winter!
